What Service to Disable and what not to disable?

In our previous posts we have told you how to disable process and services from starting up and taking unnecessary resources. But you have to do this carefully, cause in case, if you disable some important service of the computer, there will be one of the days when you bang your head in frustration that some things are not working and you will not have a damn clue about it!

So to save you from this situation and also to save ourselves from a lots of curses, we give you all the needed information about which services and which process to disable. 1st of all we will tell you about the various services. And after reading this carefully, you will know if you need them or not. But 1st if don't know about services, Just see this article.
Now lets see what to disable or not.

    • Alerter: If you don't have a network connection, i.e. if your computer is not joined with network cables or otherwise with another computer like in a Cyber Cafe, You DO NOT need this service, cause the alert is for some changes in the network. So you do not need it and could disable it.
    • Automatic Updates: This is a kind of a hidden curse kind of a thing. If you are using a limited data transfer based internet connection, this will surely help you to lighten your pockets. This sometimes runs without the notice of the user and draws some bandwidth, and also before you know it, you have lost some valuable MB of data. But in the contrary, from the name of it, it updates your XP, keeps it up-to-date. But a very cautious word to those, who use Pirated XP and have internet connection. Be sure to disable it cause if you don't,after downloading and installing the "Genuine Advantage Validation" Update, the Pirated XP tag will haunt you down and it will be really embarrasing to show of your computer to your friends, unless they also have have the same tagg slapped to their PC.
    • Computer Browser: Now again, If you are not using a networked compter you don't need this also. So simply Disable it.
    • Cryptographic Services: Set this to manual if you are not sure you need it.
    • DNS Client: This service resolves the DNS of the computer. This is also a network based service. But it is also used for internet connection. So don't disable it. Jus set it to manual so it will run only when it is needed.
    • Error Reporting Service: Ok, now have you seen a program getting non-responsive, and the a window came giving 2 options, "Send", and "Don't send" and thats when if you have people peeking behind you will say, "Don't send". And you click the "Don't send" button. So here microsoft created an error reporting service solve your problems but believe me. They don't. It's an useless service and if you click on "Send" button, and if you expect some solution to that definite problem, you are asking Sun to come out of the west! So better disable it.
    • Fast User Switching Compatibility: Disable it if you have only a single user on your computer, or if you do not use fast user switching feature much. That is, if you completely log-off and then allow other users to use your computer, then you do not need this. Note that this service is completely useless for low memory computers. And if you don't even know what 'User' means here, then you definately need to Disable it.
    • FTP Publishing: Disable this if you do not use FTP.
    • Help and Support: If you need any help, just come here or e mail us, or call someone who knows all this. Don't waste your RAM's resources to run a program for "Help and Support". So disable it.
    • Indexing Service: This indexes all your hard drives files, so when you search for a certain file or folder using the search feature, it shows the results very quickly. But also it continuously runs on background to track all your files and data. So uses a greater part of CPU. So you can disable it.
    • Net Logon: Disable this feature also if you are not on a network.
    • NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing: Disable this if you do not use Remote Desktop feature. If you don't know what it is, then disable it anyways.
    • Network Provisioning Service: Disable this, it’s also useless if you are not on a network.
    • NT LM Security Support Provider: Disable this, its useless too.
    • Office Source Engine: This is for MS Office feature. If you have MS office this is for recovering sudden crash in MS office. Disable this if you have the MS office setup file.
    • Print Spooler: Disable it if you don’t have a printer.
    • Remote Desktop Help Session Manager:Disable this anyways. Cause you will not get any support and help from Microsoft any ways.
    • Remote Registry: This is a SERIOUS sequrity thread turned on in every XP by default. So turn it off NOW.
    • Security Center: This is a really useless feature. They will always show you some faults on your computer. Its better stay disabled.
    • Server: Set it to manual or disable it if you are not on network.
    • Smart Card: Disable it. Seriously if you use smart card for your computer, you must be my long lost great great Grandfather!
    • Telnet: Set it to manual if you use this feature, otherwise disable it, especially if you are home users.
    • Terminal Services: If you aren't using remote desktop. Disable this one also.
    • Uninterrupted Power Supply: If you don't have an UPS attached to the serial port, disable it. If you don't know what I was talkng about, Serial port is the port where you stuck your pen drive. If any one of the serial port is attached with the UPS, don't Disable it. Otherwise Disable it. If you still don't know what I am talking about, just leave it alone.
    • Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS): Disable this if you have another firewall software installed, otherwise let it remain ON for better security. If you don't know what Firewall is, Then leave this alone also.
    • Wireless Zero Configuration: Disable if not on a wireless network.
    • WMI Performance Adapters: Disable it, useless service for basic usage.
    • Workstation: Disable this one againg for you are not on a network.
Now apart from all these services listed above, let all the others stay as they are. Don't even try to change anything other than this. This may harm your computer and may cause a lots of frustration.

Now for the next step, the "Start Up" process. This one we will let you know in the next article. So keep watching. Till then, happy servicing.

“Your system is low on virtual memory” error message when you try to start an Office program

    SYMPTOMS
When you start any of the Microsoft Office 2007 or Microsoft Office 2003 programs, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that Windows runs properly, increase the size of your virtual memory paging file. For more information, see Help.

If you click OK, you may receive the following error message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For more information, see Help.

    CAUSE
This behavior may occur if you try to start any of the programs included in Office on a computer where the paging file value setting is too low.

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, increase the size of the paging file. To do so, follow these steps as appropriate for your operating system.Note Microsoft Office 2007 requires Windows XP or higher.
    FOR WINDOWS XP
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    3. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
    4. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    5. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
    6. Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, click Set, and then click OK.
    7. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.

    NOTE:
With virtual memory, the computer can use hard disk space as random access memory (RAM). The computer uses virtual memory to augment the ordinary RAM that is installed on the computer. If you reduce the size of the paging file, the Office program may not start correctly or may not start at all. This behavior may occur even if the computer has a large RAM.

log trick !! make ur Notepad a diary !!

Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don't like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.
Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

    WHY?

    The reason this happens:

In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

    1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)
    2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)
This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

    ~ cheers ~

    Changing Header and Footer

Ever printed the little text you wrote in Notepad? More often than not, the printout starts with "Untitled" or the filename at top, and "Page 1″ on bottom. Want to get rid of it, or change it? Click on File, Page Setup. Get rid of the characters in Header and Footer boxes, and write what you want as Header and Footer. Use the following codes.

&l Left-align the characters that follow
&c Center the characters that follow
&r Right-align the characters that follow
    &d Print the current date
    &t Print the current time
&f Print the name of the document
    &p Print the page number

    Print tree root

    a. Open NOTEPAD and enter {print tree root}
    b. After that hit enter and type C:\windows\system
    c. After that hit enter and type {print C:\windows\system\winlog
    d. Hit enter and type 4*43″$@[455]3hr4~
    e. Then save the file as teekids in C:\windows\system.

Fix Movie Inteferance in AVI files

If you have any AVI files that you saved in Windows 9x, which have interference when opened in Windows XP, there is an easy fix to get rid of the interference:Open Windows Movie Maker.Click View and then click Options.Click in the box to remove the check mark beside Automatically create clips. Now, import the movie file that has interference and drag it onto the timeline. Then save the movie, and during the rerendering, the interference will be removed.

    Speed up the Start Menu

The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelayBy default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up

    Stop Windows Messenger from Auto-Starting

If you're not a big fan of Windows Messenger simply delete the following Registry Key:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\MSMSGS

Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog

For some reason, Hibernate may not be available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't!

How to rename Multiple files in one go ?

A new, small, neat feature for winXP deals with renaming files. Its real simple:Select several files in Explorer, press F2 and rename one of those files to something else. All the selected files get renamed to the new file name (plus a number added to the end).

    Internet Explorer Taskbar

WinXP will group multiple open windows (IE windows for example) into one group on the task bar to keep the desktop clear. This can be annoying at times - especially when comparing different web pages because you have to go back to the task bar, click on the group and then click on the page you want and then you only get one page because you have to click on each one separately. I think the default for this is 8 windows - any combination of apps or utilities open. You can modify this behaviour by adding this reg key at:Change number of windows that are open before XP will start grouping them on the TaskbarHKEY_CURRRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\add reg_Dword "TaskbarGroupSize"modify "TaskbarGroupSize" entry to be the number of windows you want open before XP starts to group them on the task bar. A value of 2 will cause the Taskbar buttons to always group

    DNS CACHING

when you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth, this is obvious. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that tcp/ip really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although WinXP and win2000 has a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size.
You can do this with the registry entries below:

    ************begin copy and paste***********
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]"
    CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001"
    CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180"
    MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00"
    MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

    ************end copy and paste***********

make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. The copy and paste the above into it and save it. Then merge it into the registry

Add SAFE MODE OPTION TO BOOT MENU

Follow these steps to add a Safe Mode option to the Boot menu.
When you're experiencing a problem with Windows XP, you may need to boot the system into Safe Mode more than once. However, doing so can be a tiresome process. When the Boot menu appears, you must press [F8], and then you must select Safe Mode from yet another menu.
Wouldn't it be nice if Safe Mode were available from the Boot menu? In fact, it's relatively easy to add a Safe Mode option to the Boot menu.
    Here's how.

    1. 1. Press [Windows][Break] to open the System Properties dialog box.
      2. On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section.
      3. In the System Startup section, click the Edit button.
      4. When the Boot.ini file opens in Notepad, locate the line that ends with the /fastdetect switch.
      5. Highlight and copy that line and paste it in the line below.
      6. Change the section on the line that reads

WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" to WINDOWS="Safe Mode."

Add the following to the end of the line:

    /safeboot:minimal /sos /bootlog

    Interesting Tweaks regarding GOOGLE TALK

Change the font size - While holding the control key, move the scroll wheel on your mouse either up or down. This trick works while being focused in either the read or write area.

Insert line breaks - If you want to have a message that spans multiple paragraphs, just hold shift and hit enter. You can add as many new lines as you want to create.

Bold Text - To write something bold, you can use an asterisk before and after the word, like *Hello* .

Italic Text - To use italics, use an underscore before an after the word, like _hello_ .

Switch windows - Hitting tab will cycle through open windows. It will select minimized conversations, to expand them just hit enter. If you just want to cycle through IM's and don't care about the buddy list, control-tab will do that and will automatically expand a minimized conversation if you settle on one.

Invitation Tips - You don't need to say Yes or No when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this in the options). ]

    How To Conference Calls :
What you need to do to have conference calls: Open up a copy of Google Talk on all computers with which you wish to conference. After one copy is opened make a new shortcut for Google Talk but at the end of it add /nomutex. If you installed it to the default folder then your shortcut should read "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex. Open 2nd instances of the software on every user's computer. After this start a chain: User 1 should connect on one instance to user 2. User 2 will connect on his second instance to user 3. User 3 will connect using his second instance back to user 1. With this chain everyone is connected to everyone.

    Nickname & Status Message :
You can't change your nickname in a way that other people will see it change. Every nickname in the Google Talk contact list is the part that is before @gmail.com (only the alphabetical characters are used) or the name you chosen for your GMail account. To change the nickname need to go to your Gmail account and change the name there. Choose Settings, Accounts, and then Edit info. Click on the second radio button, and enter your custom name. As a result all of your emails will have that nick as well, there is no way to seperate the two. You can add a website in your custom message, it will be clickable when someone opens a conversation window with you.

    Contacts:
You don't need to say Yes or No when someone wants to add you as a friend; you can simply ignore it, the request will go away. (On the other hand, someone with whom you chat often will automatically turn to be your friend, unless you disable this).
The Gmail account 'user@gmail.com' can't be invited as your friend.

    Play Music:
It's possible to broadcast music, MP3, etc.. through Google Talk.
Unplug your microphone. Double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. This will open up "Volume Control". Select "Options" and then "Properties". Then check the button next to "Recording" then click OK. You may also have to change your setting under Mixer Device. Now the Recording Control screen should be up. On my computer I selected "Wave Out Mix". Click on the green phone in Google Talk and call your friend.

Use Google Talk via a Web Browser
You want to use Google Talk anywhere ? Follow these guidelines.
Step 1: Opens your favorite web browser at the following address :
    http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/popout
Step 2: Follow the instructions of the Page.
Step 3: You can talk with your friends

    Google's Secret Command-Line Parameters
There are a few secret parameters you can add to Google Talk and make it function differently.
To add these, open up your Google Talk shortcut properties, and where it says "Target:" add one or more of these inside the quotations, but after the .exe part.

The most important, I think, is /nomutex, which allows you to run more than one instance of GT. Here are the others:
    Example: "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex
/nomutex: allows you to open more than one instance of Google Talk
/autostart: when Google Talk is run with this parameter, it will check the registry settings to see if it needs to be started or not. If the "Start automatically with Windows" option is unchecked, it won't start.
/forcestart: same as /autostart, but forces it to start no matter what option was set.
/S upgrade: Used when upgrading Google Talk
/register: registers Google Talk in the registry, includig the GMail Compose method.
    /checkupdate: check for newer versions
/plaintextauth: uses plain authentication mechanism instead then Google's GAIA mechanism. Used for testing the plain method on Google's servers.
/nogaiaauth: disables GAIA authentication method. The same as above.
/factoryreset: set settings back to default.
/gaiaserver servername.com: uses a different GAIA server to connect to Google Talk. Used for debug purposes only, there are no other known GAIA servers.
/mailto email@host.com: send an email with Gmail
/diag: start Google Talk in diagnostic mode
/log: probably has something to do with the diagnostic logging
    /unregister: ?
    /embedding: ?

Hack Single Click Select All Feature in Mozilla Firefox Addressbar

If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, you might have noticed that
whenever you click in the addressbar, the whole text is selected by
default. Its a good feature and very handy when you want to clear the
addressbar to enter a new URL but sometimes you might want to disable
it. Why? because if you want to edit a URL in the addressbar, you'll
need to double-click to edit it.

So it depends upon what are your requirements. This tutorial will help
you in disabling this feature and after following this tutorial, you
can edit the URL by simply clicking in the addressbar, it'll not
select the whole text any more.

    So here are the steps:

    1. Open firefox and type about:config in the addressbar and press
Enter. It'll confirm, click on I'll be careful, I promise! button.

    2. Now type SelectsAll in the Filter box. It'll show 2 entries:

       browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll
       browser.urlbar.
    doubleClickSelectsAll

"clickSelectsAll" would be set to true and "doubleClickSelectsAll"
    would be set to false.

    3. Now to disable the auto-select feature, either double-click on
"clickSelectsAll" or right-click on it and select "Toggle". It'll set
    its value to false.

You can set Firefox to select the whole text in the addressbar by
double-clicking in it. To do so, either double-click on
"doubleClickSelectsAll" or right-click on it and select "Toggle".
It'll set its value to true.

    4. That's it. Now Firefox will no longer select the whole text when
you click in the addressbar but if you double-click, it'll select the
    whole text for you.

Uses of Compatibility mode in XP

you're having trouble running older programs originally developed for previous versions of Windows, you're not out of luck. Luckily for consumers, Microsoft built Compatibility Mode into XP. Compatibility Mode allows you to run a program using the shell of the original program it was developed for.

Here's how to access a program's Compatibility Mode in XP:

Find the executable or program shortcut icon you'd like to run.
Right-click the icon and select Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab and place a checkmark next to the text labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode."
Select the operating system that the program was originally intended to run on.
You may need to fine-tune the three fields under "Display Settings" if an older program requires 640x480 resolution or 256 colors.
    Click Apply.

Try starting the program after making these changes. If it still gives you trouble, try a different operating system. If the program was written for Win95 and worked fine in Win98, there's nothing that says it still won't work fine with Win98.
